Jugalbandi goes global

A bid to propagate nomadic values and culture

TWO TO TANGO: A still from a perfomance by members of a nomadic tribe.

NEW DELHI: To propagate nomadic values and culture, Nomadic Orchestra of World (NOW) is embarking on a trip to Rome, Germany, Austria and Switzerland where it will present a series of jugalbandi concerts. Conceived by National Award-winning film and culture activist couple Meenakshi and Vinay Rai, NOW reaches out to nomadic gypsy musicians across the world to build a common voice. They say their “framework of repositioning local in global” is creating opportunities for nomadic communities.
Aimed at keeping alive the rich nomadic music, NOW was set up to bring to the forefront nomadic musicians who were contemplating abandoning their music in search of livelihood. From Rome, singer-cum-composer Andrea Camerini is working with NOW to create jugalbandis within the nomadic communities who are not used to performing in groups.
Members of the NOW musician troupe from India belong to the Bhopa, Banjara and Kalbeliya communities. They will take off on their European tour this Saturday.
